Thomas Burton is the Senior Tax Manager and Director of Construction and Real Estate Services at Councilor, bringing 40 years of experience in tax planning, preparation, and compliance. He also plans and administers trusts and estates to help high-net-worth individuals create lasting family legacy plans. When crafting tax strategies, he carefully assesses clients’ motivations, as well as their financial and operational objectives, to align strategies with their specific goals.
Tom joined Councilor in 2018 and has built a reputation for providing thoughtful guidance across a wide range of client industries. He advises partnerships and S corporations in the construction and real estate sectors on matters such as Section 1031 like-kind exchanges and housing credits. Additionally, clients in transportation, retail, distribution, healthcare, and the not-for-profit sector turn to Tom for support when planning transactions, business sales and purchases, and organizational restructurings.
Before joining Councilor, Tom spent more than 20 years as a tax director at a Maryland-based regional CPA firm, after holding management roles at two national firms. He has also served as a speaker and instructor for numerous professional groups and associations and has appeared on radio and television programs to discuss a range of tax issues.
