Thinking Ahead for 100+ Years

Councilor was founded in 1921, during a time of change, when business leaders needed clarity they could trust. From day one, we focused on thoughtful guidance excellence grounded in real human connection.

Great ideas age better. Councilor’s legacy is proof.

Over the decades, we’ve helped shape the accounting profession by anticipating change, leading in key practices, and partnering with clients and peers,  quietly earning trust one client at a time. Our name has evolved, but one belief has never changed: the best advisory work starts with deep understanding and thoughtful collaboration, the foundation for better decisions today, and tomorrow.

Built in 1921. Wired for What’s Next.

1921

The Beginning:
James A. Councilor, Sr. leaves the organization that would become the IRS to found Councilor & Company.

When the new income tax system was taking shape, he recognized that individuals and businesses would need trusted guidance to navigate it. He built a firm grounded in clarity, ethics, and service, the foundation for
a century of trusted client relationships.

1924

Shaping the Profession:
Councilor becomes president of what is now the Greater Washington Society of CPAs.

From its earliest years, he and the firm helped establish professional standards that continue to guide public accounting today.

1930– 1947

Breaking Barriers:
Edna Nick joins the firm in 1930 after becoming the first woman to pass the Virginia CPA exam.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, she became the firm’s first woman partner, reshaping expectations for leadership in the profession.

1961

A Growing Leadership Bench:
The firm becomes Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell.

The inclusion of Buchanan, a highly respected accountant and business leader, and Mitchell reflected a deliberate expansion of leadership and expertise, strengthening the firm while preserving its founding values.

2014– 2020

Expanding with Purpose:
Strategic mergers extend CBM’s advisory depth and geographic footprint.

CBM completed seven mergers between 2014 and 2020, significantly accelerating the firm’s growth during this period. Each firm joined around a shared mission, bringing new capabilities into Councilor’s center without diluting its core values or approach.

2021

A Century of Independence:
CBM celebrates 100 years of continuous, independent service to clients and the community it serves.

Few firms have reached this milestone without losing their identity. Councilor did so by preserving what mattered most: trust, expertise, and commitment to impact.

2026

The Next Chapter:
CBM rebrands to Councilor.

Emphasizing the legacy that started it all, this recommitment reaffirms the forward-thinking principles and client focus that have guided the firm for over a century.

Build the Future

Perspective Built by the Past. Beliefs that Shape the Future.

A century of advising clients has taught us what actually works, how to listen, when to challenge, and which details drive successful outcomes. At Councilor, every engagement reflects principles refined over generations and applied to your situation today.
