Maryland’s annual Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, taking place August 9–15, 2026, provides one opportunity for families and individuals to reduce costs on qualifying purchases while taking advantage of an available tax benefit.
During Tax-Free Week, qualifying apparel and footwear priced at $100 or less per item are exempt from Maryland’s 6% state sales tax. The first $40 of the purchase price of a backpack or bookbag is also exempt.

- Shoes and boots
- Other qualifying apparel items
- Backpacks and bookbags (up to the first $40)
Some purchases do not qualify, including accessories such as purses, scarves, ties, and jewelry. Items above the exemption limits may also remain subject to sales tax.
