Joseph Barreca is the Senior Manager of Not-for-Profit Tax at Councilor, where he brings 20 years of experience in not-for-profit consulting and taxation. He has dedicated his career to serving as a trusted advisor to public charities, private foundations, business leagues, social welfare organizations, and social and recreational clubs. Clients rely on him for in-depth knowledge of everything from achieving compliance with complex tax regulations to collaborating on financial strategies for long-term organizational stability.
Joseph joined Councilor in 2023 and regularly partners with clients’ leadership teams, including executives and boards of directors. He began his career at a public accounting firm in New York and later worked at local, regional, and national firms throughout the New York metropolitan area.
Joseph is passionate about the role not-for-profit organizations play in their communities, which is why he has focused his career on supporting them. He helps clients navigate complex tax issues, meet transparency requirements, and respond effectively to a changing regulatory environment.
A versatile compliance expert, Joseph’s work extends beyond federal and state taxation requirements. He prepares federal Forms 990, 990-PF, and 990-T and advises clients on unrelated business income reporting. He also supports newer organizations through the IRS tax-exempt application process and assists established clients with maintaining compliance.
